Review: A MOTHER’S SONG: A NEW FOLK MUSICAL, EP - Online
New musical A Mother's Song is set to receive its world premiere at Macrobert Arts Centre in Stirling from 23-26 February.
Co-created by Scottish composer Finn Anderson and director Tania Azevedo, the story spans over 400 years. Taking us from 17th Century Stirling to 21st Century New York City and following three remarkable women, in different times in history, tracing the incredible journey of Scottish folk music across the Atlantic.
There are themes of identity, motherhood and choice presented in a bold and life-affirming story.
Featuring Bethany Tennick, Kirsty Findlay, Melanie Bell, Blythe Jandoo, Tinashe Warikandwa and Craig Hunter, the show also includes an all-female live band.
We’ve recently been given the opportunity, Besties, to listen to a few of the songs from the soon to be released EP, and we can honestly say, what a treat!
The content is both moving and toe-tapping, the passion and emotions of the story and characters bleeds through the lyrics and vocals - and what stunning vocals they are! This, combined with the traditional sound of Scottish folk music, invokes the spiritual and sublime.
In particular, 'Let No Man Steal Your Time' has the most beautiful harmonies and, sung in acapella, is just perfect in every way.
If the music is anything to go by then audiences are in for a treat with the full version of the story and the production is deserving all the recognition possible!
***** Five stars
