National treasure Barbara Windsor has sadly passed away aged 83, following a battle with Alzheimer’s.

Best known for playing Peggy Mitchell in Eastenders and appearing in nine Carry On films, Windsor made her West End debut aged 15. She received a Tony nomination for her role in Oh, What A Lovely War! on Broadway in 1964 and has also performed in musicals including Twang!! and Come Spy With Me.

She starred in The Threepenny Opera with Vanessa Redgrave in 1972, and played Kath in Joe Orton’s Entertaining Mr Sloane in 1981 before touring with the show in 1993.

Windsor’s last stage appearance was in pantomime Dick Whittington at Bristol Hippodrome in 2010.

Our thoughts are with her family and friends at this difficult time.
