The TKTS ticket booth has been at the heart of Leicester Square for almost 40 years, selling discounted tickets to fans of the West End from all over the world.

Unfortunately, due to the long-term closures of venues in the city and to the disappointment of theatre fans everywhere, the popular booth is set to close “for the foreseeable future as there is no requirement to sell tickets”.

London venues have been closed since lockdown began in March 2020 and there is no date set for reopening. Many shows, including those produced by Cameron Mackintosh (Les Miserables, Hamilton, Mary Poppins, Phantom of the Opera) have already announced that they won’t be reopening until Spring 2021, with Phantom expected to remain closed longer than that whilst it undergoes much needed repairs.

The TKTS booth will be missed by many, particularly tourists and theatre fans, as it was the go-to destination for theatre lovers hoping to find the latest discounts and offers on some of the biggest shows in the West End.

Originally called the ‘Official Half Price Ticket Booth’, it was set up in 1980 on the southside of Leicester Square in the clock tower building and according to operator Society of London, the booth was responsible for selling 400,000 tickets a year.

SOLT is currently consulting with staff members over the loss of jobs that the closure could cause.
