Review: READY, STEADY, GO! Polka Theatre

The Polka Theatre is back after being shut for a major refurbishment, with amazing children’s play areas and a brand new cafe. However, the main focus for our visit is their current show Ready, Steady, GO!

Jennie Eggleton plays Sophie, a girl who relives an epic cycling trip with her Portuguese mother, played by Marta Carvalho. The show entertains children with lights and shadows and although the children cannot touch them, the various props made of different materials are a feast for the senses. The use of different fabrics and materials encourages young children to use their imagination and the script includes some Portuguese dialogue, which many children found interesting.

Joe Hornsby deserves special mention for his lighting of the show. It is one of the highlights as they certainly captivate the children. The set, including a mountain peak constructed by Jake Evans, is also an impressive backdrop to Hornsby’s lights and shadows.

Peter Glanville writes and directs the show and creates something that is both educational and entertaining.
