Review: HP HOUSE CUP, Interrupt the Routine (Online)

HP House Cup 4 stars

Calling all Potterheads, this is one for you! You may think that you possess sound knowledge of the world of Harry Potter but I, for one, was certainly proven wrong in the latest round of theatre company Interrupt The Routine’s HP House Cup - a 40-question quiz, complete with additional tasks to earn points for your house and the chance to win some prizes.

Embarking on its second House Cup after a successful first outing earlier this year, each Friday focuses on a different book/film from J.K Rowling’s popular franchise, with last night being based on the sixth instalment, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince.

Presented on the lush Partyspace platform with multiple rooms to navigate between (although don’t let Mr Filch and Mrs Norris catch you roaming the corridors after dark!), the software - although not completely flawless in its technical execution - is easy to use, with ‘Angus Yungledore’ guiding you through. His charm, effortless wit and costumed personality as the much-loved authority figure makes the process an enjoyable and humorous experience, whilst also having the chance to interact with other like-minded participants.

There is a lovely sense of community instilled on this platform, which is perfect for the current climate when many have only had the option to interact through a computer screen. There are clear regulars who compete each week but you can also attend just the one event if you so wish.

The house tasks break up the quiz nicely when you move from your designated common room to the Room of Requirement. The chat function is utilised well for the ‘fastest finger first’ type round and is also widely used to communicate with others throughout the game. You have the chance to turn your camera and microphone on if you wish or to retain an air of mystery, it is also fine to keep them switched off.

The questions do appear to be geared towards hardcore Potter fans but irrespective of whether you are at this level or not, you are guaranteed a fun, entertaining and somewhat educational evening.

**** Four stars
