Hamilton’s release on Disney+ has been such an unparalleled success that it has been wondered whether future musical releases will follow suit and go straight to streaming services, rather than waiting to be released at the cinema. However, director of the forthcoming In The Heights film, Jon M. Chu, has said that Lin-Manual Miranda’s hit musical needs to be watched on the big screen.

Warner Bros Pictures originally set a release date of 26 June 2020 but this has been postponed for a year and will now be released on 18 June 2021.

Chu said: “Everyone who knows our movie or has seen our movie knows that it feels like it needs to be on the big screen. Many movies don’t have to be, but there’s a spirit about this one, a scope about this one, that I think we all believed in. So, there wasn't a fight between should we stream this or put this in the theater."
