GODSPELL to play at Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre
It has been announced that a new professional revival of Stephen Schwartz and John-Michael Tevelak’s Godspell will run at Ye Olde Rose and Crown Theatre later this year. It will run at the Walthamstow venue from 25 September to 10 October following a scheduled postponement from its originally planned May opening.
This production of Godspell will be the third show produced by Brendan Matthew, Laurel Dougall and Laura Hyde for CR8TRACT Theatre and Jim Shields. Matthew will also direct the production, with musical direction by Benjamin Levy, choreography by Matthew, Hyde and Connor Lewis. It will also feature lighting by Matthew Swithinbank and sound design by Daniel Mawson, with Ashen Gupta as associate director.
Godspell tells the story of a community of lost disciples who are brought together by following the words of a reinvented contemporary Jesus Christ. Taking messages from the gospel of Matthew and ultimately leading to his crucifixion, Jesus teaches his new tribe the value of love, hope and friendship through storytelling, song and dance. The score by Stephen Schwartz, the composer of Wicked and The Prince of Egypt includes hits such as ‘Day by Day’ and ‘Beautiful City’.
