Further casting revealed for THE COLOR PURPLE film

Further casting has been announced for the upcoming musical film adaptation of The Color Purple, with Fantasia Barrino and Danielle Brooks taking on the roles of Celie and Sofia respectively.

Winner of the third season of American Idol, Barrino took over the role of Celie in the original Broadway production of the musical in 2007, with Orange is the New Black star Brooks having earned herself a Tony award nomination for playing Sofia in the 2015 Broadway revival.

They join the previously announced Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Corey Hawkins as Harpo and H.E.R. as Squeak; the. latter of whom is reported to be writing a new song for the film.

Blitz Bazawule will direct the film with a script by Marcus Gardley. 

The film is scheduled for release in 2023.
