Fringe review: RECIRQUEL - PARADISUM, Assembly Roxy

Recirquel’s Paradisum is a breathtaking masterpiece that truly stands out at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. This Hungarian physical theatre company has created something spectacular, exploring the evolution of creatures from the natural world through a seamless blend of aerial and ground circus work, contemporary dance, and mesmerising choreography. Each act transitions flawlessly into the next, making the performance feel like a cohesive, continuous piece rather than isolated segments.

The opening contemporary dance is both powerful and detailed, with the solo performer using their body as a profound medium of communication. The atmosphere created is hauntingly dystopian, modern yet rooted in ancient themes, enhanced by dramatic lighting and an intricate stage design. The stunning use of fabric, texture, and flashing lights transports the audience to an otherworldly setting that feels alive and ever-evolving.

As the performance progresses, each new act deepens the enchantment. A beautiful dancer using an elevating arc, and another closer to traditional circus juggling and balancing on stairs, adds layers of intrigue and skill. Even those more common acts feel completely at home in the story. The audience was visibly moved—gasping in awe at brilliant moments and shedding tears at the show’s more subtle emotional depths.

Paradisum is an extraordinary experience that lingers in the mind, a true pleasure to witness. Highly recommended for anyone seeking a show that is both visually stunning and emotionally striking.
