Fringe review: PLAYFIGHT, ROUNDABOUT @ Summerhall

Sex Education meets Skins in this unflinching portrayal of teenage angst and desire. Three students, Keira, Zanab, and Lucy form the heart of this raw exploration into the complexities of adolescence. Sophie Cox shines as the bold and unconventional Keira, a welcome contrast to the duo played by Nina Cassells and Lucy Mangan.

The play fearlessly navigates the tumultuous world of teenage sexuality, from the thrill of first experiences to the devastating consequences of a shared online video. It’s a stark reminder of the power and fragility of youth.

While the exploration of masturbation, orgasms, and religion is refreshing in its honesty, the script occasionally veers into preachy territory. The tree metaphor, intended as a powerful symbol of growth and resilience, sometimes feels forced and out of place.

Despite these minor flaws, the play offers a poignant and often shocking look at the pressures faced by today's teenagers. Emma Callander's direction keeps the pace energetic, and the performances are raw and authentic. Ultimately, this is a play that will resonate with audiences who have experienced the exhilaration and terror of youth first-hand.

While it may not be perfect, Playfight is a brave and necessary exploration of a complex and often misunderstood stage of life.
