Review: DERREN BROWN - SHOWMAN, UK Tour (The Alexandra, Birmingham)

According to Wikipedia, Derren Brown is an “English mentalist, illusionist, painter and author”. Yet what we had the pleasure of witnessing last night, we don’t quite know how to describe. Showman feels much more like an audience with Derren Brown rather than a magic show. It is a continual conversation between us, as an audience, and the man himself.

It is requested for all to resist discussing what takes place in Showman, and we hope this is honoured. Anyone who wishes to see the show is better off entering without the faintest idea of what they are about to experience. That way they can leave just as mind boggled and slightly frustrated as we did!

What is no secret is that this show has sentimental value. Audiences are asked prior to arrival to bring something of sentimental value and significance that can fit into the palm of your hand. If you are one of the lucky few to experience the mind reading magic first hand, it will be an experience that you will cherish forever.

Showman has the air of old school flair, some of the trickery perfect for a mysterious touring circus with subtle modernisations. Everyone present has the opportunity to participate, uniting the eager and the sceptics in a unique shared experience. Regardless of your approach, Brown does things beyond the reach of the most inquisitive logic or reason.

The set is simple and the tricks are aided with projections and a mobile camera to ensure that even the smallest detail is visible in the 1500-seater theatre that is The Alexandra, Birmingham.

Brown is as witty as he is charming, which makes a powerfully engaging performer. The “big tricks” will leave you wowed but they are sparse and the punctuating trickery is at times underwhelming or lost when compared to Brown’s previous productions.

Overall however, Showman is a gentle and alluring show. Many questions will be raised that are left unanswered, and it is all part of the magic.

**** Four stars
