Grammy, Tony and Emmy winner and two-time Oscar nominee Cynthia Erivo will take on the title role in a remake of the Bette Midler starring film The Rose. Erivo has also signed on to produce the new movie for Searchlight.

The musical romantic drama follows a self-destructive rock star who struggles to deal with the constant pressures of her career and the demands of those who surround her.

Whilst the new production will pay homage to the original, a contemporary lens will be placed on the film, with a modern look at the high prices of fame. It is loosely based on the life of Janis Joplin and is deemed the quintessential film about fame and addiction.

The original film directed by Mark Rydell went on to earn four Oscar nominations including best actress for Midler.

The production will be produced under the banner Edith’s Daughter alongside Solome Williams, with Williams serving as vice president of development at the label.

The film’s writer and director have yet to be announced and further casting will be announced in due course.
