Capital Theatres looks forward to a sparkling season of shows in 2022
Following First Minister Nicola Sturgeon’s announcement that theatres can reopen from full capacity in Scotland today, Capital Theatres are welcoming audiences back to their three venues with a stunning variety of shows in 2022.
Fiona Gibson, CEO of Capital Theatres, said: “Since we reopened our doors in June, it’s been heartening to see our beloved audiences return to our theatres and experience the buzz of live performance once more.
“This year we’ve got magical musicals, comedy gold, compelling drama and the very best from our national companies, Scottish Opera, Scottish Ballet, and the National Theatre of Scotland (NTS). Plus it’s never too early to be thinking about next Christmas as we see not only the brilliant ballet returning with The Snow Queen, but also our very own King’s Panto, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, transferred to the Festival Theatre while the King’s undergoes its transformational redevelopment.
“As well as selecting this mouth-watering programme of touring productions, we’ve been working on creative endeavours of our own. Our final show in the King’s before it closes for redevelopment will be Sunshine on Leith, our very own co-production with Pitlochry Festival Theatre. What better treat for Edinburgh audiences than a musical which showcases the beauty and brilliance of their hometown to the iconic soundtrack of beloved Leithers The Proclaimers. There’s also our epic co-production of James IV – Queen of the Fight with Raw Material, in association with NTS. We’ll host the world premiere of this piece of landmark theatre in October.
“Make your 2022 extraordinary at Capital Theatres!”
Productions touring to Capital Theatres in 2022 include Bedknobs and Broomsticks; Six; Everybody’s Talking About Jamie; Wise Children’s Wuthering Heights; National Theatre of Scotland’s Orphans; Hannah Gadsby; Stewart Lee; The Osmonds: A New Musical; and The Cher Show, along with Rambert’s Peaky Blinders: The Redemption of Thomas Shelby announced for 2023, all on sale now.
Capital Theatres are co-producing Sunshine on Leith with Pitlochry Festival Theatre. This collaboration continues Capital Theatres’ ambition to have a key creative role in Scottish theatre making and talent development. Sunshine on Leith will be the final show in the King’s Theatre season before it closes for a transformational £25m Capital Redevelopment, with public fundraising continuing throughout the season and through the redevelopment.
Capital Theatres and Raw Material will also present James IV – Queen of the Fight, in association with National Theatre of Scotland. In Autumn 2022, Rona Munro returns to Scottish stages with this bold new production directed by Laurie Sansom – the duo who brought us James I, II and III. They are reunited with designer Jon Bausor who also worked on the first three plays, and joined by Venus ex Machina as Composer. The Festival Theatre will host the world premiere of this co-production before it tours Scotland.
Audiences can also look forward to the return of Capital Theatres’ much-loved Christmas shows – the Panto, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and Scottish Ballet’s The Snow Queen.
