Bush Theatre announces the broadcast of new work

Project 2036

The Bush Theatre has announced that it will be broadcasting new work in the shape of 2036, which consists of three short works from the next generation of theatre designers.

2036 will be presented by the Project 2036 cohort and will be available to stream on-demand from 8pm on 22 April until midnight on 29 April.

Project 2036 is a programme run by The Bush Theatre, which gives the opportunity of a £7,500 bursary each year to emerging theatre designers of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic or Refugee background. This year presenting their work will be set designer QianEr Jin, sound designer Darius McFarlane and lighting designer Devon Muller.

Daniel Bailey, Associate Director of the Bush Theatre said: “Our Project 2036 cohort was supposed to present their work in the summer of 2020. Covid-19 meant we had to cancel that, but it has allowed us to create three different showcases, which each designer has led with their ideas and concept. In their own creative voice they each ask the question: Can design truly lead the theatrical process?

“In this challenging period, we wanted to support our freelance family, twenty of whom will be collaborating on and contributing to the three showcases and providing guidance and expertise to our 2036 cohort. This project was always about how we make this industry more accessible for marginalised communities and with this opportunity we can do that. Shout-out to Devon, QianEr Jin, and Darius on their journeys!”

The three pieces being presented this year are Pawn by Devon Miller, which will be his professional debut as a lighting designer, and explores race and identity; One Day is QianEr Jin’s show and he uses his set design to look at life through the eyes of a mayfly, which lives its whole life in a single day. The final piece is LimBo by Darius McFarlane who uses his sound design to explore how the events of 2020 have changed us.

Tickets for the event is on a ‘Pay What You Decide’ basis with tickets available at £2, £5, or £10 (+£5 donation) and can be booked here.
