BROADWAY BACKWARDS makes its virtual premiere on 30 March

Broadway Backwards

The first virtual edition of Broadway Backwards will be streamed online on 30 March, to raise money for Broadway Cares and the LGBT Community Center in New York City.

Taking a hopeful, musical look at life post-pandemic, Broadway Backwards will explore how isolation during the Covid-19 pandemic has affected the LGBTQ community.

The show will feature Jay Armstrong Johnson as an isolated New Yorker who dreams a fantastical journey guided by a late-night television host, portrayed by Jenn Colella. New performances will be merged with full numbers from previous editions of Broadway Backwards to create a performance that feels distinctly of the moment.

Opening the show will be a star-studded number featuring Stephanie J. Block, Deborah Cox and Lea Salonga, plus there will be performances and appearances from Matt Bomer, Darren Criss, Ariana DeBose, Robin De Jesús, Cynthia Erivo, Joshua Henry, Cherry Jones, Kelli O’Hara and Jim Parsons, with more to be announced.

This virtual show has been written and directed by Broadway Backwards creator Robert Bartley, with musical supervision by Mary-Mitchell Campbell, musical direction by Ted Arthur, orchestrations by Nick Connors, sound by Matt Kraus and costumes by Samantha Rodriguez.

The free online event can be viewed here and on the Broadway Cares YouTube channel on Tuesday 30 March at 8pm EST. It will also be made available on demand afterwards until Saturday 3 April. Whilst the stream is free, donations are encouraged.
