George Takei’s musical Allegiance will be streamed on BroadwayHD from 18 March, it has been recently announced.

The show tells the real life experiences of Takei during World War II and the consequent years following Pearl Harbour. It will be available on the platform worldwide excluding Asia.

The musical stars Takei, alongside Tony Award winner Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon, Mulan) and Broadway star Telly Leung (Godspell, Glee), plus Katie Rose Clarke, Michael K. Lee, Christopheren Nomura and Greg Watanabe.

Allegiance originally opened on Broadway in November 2015 and was produced by Sing Out, Louise! Productions and ATA. The musical features a book by Marc Acito, Jay Kuo and Lorenzo Thione, with music and lyrics by Kuo. The streamed stage-to-film performance has been adapted by Sing Out, Louise! Productions and directed by Lorenzo Thione.

Allegiance sees Takei play Sam Kimura, taking a trip back through his history after being given a mysterious letter. We then see young Sam (Leung) and his sister Kei (Salonga) strive to save their family from wrongful imprisonment of Japanese Americans during World War II. This pulls on Takei’s own experiences in internment camps from the age of 5 through to the end of World War II.
