We are ‘Halfway to Heaven’ with this news! Sir Tim Rice has revealed that a major new production of his and Elton John’s award-winning musical, Aida, is in the works.

The first production of Aida was performed in Atlanta in 1998, prior to its successful run on Broadway with Heather Headley in the lead role.

Speaking on his podcast, ‘Get Onto My Cloud’, Rice said: “Before this pandemic swept the globe, a timetable for a major new production of Aida, involving an American tour, followed by, we hoped, a return to Broadway before Europe and notably the West End, was in serious preparation.” This will mark its UK premiere in a professional capacity.

The director is tipped to be Schele Williams, who starred in the original Aida cast, with David Henry Hwang and Bob Crowley making up the creative team alongside Rice and Elton John.

In a revised plan due to the pandemic, the production will run in London after its stint in Germany.

Further information regarding dates, casting and venues will be released in due course.
