The Phantom of the Opera is coming to the small screen! Expected to be a six-part series, the show will retell the classic gothic story in accordance with the original novel.

Best known for its stage adaptation, the Phantom is a disfigured composer who lurks beneath the Paris Opera House. But when he becomes obsessed with Christine Daae, a young singer; their relationship has tragic consequences.

The project is being produced by Gaumont UK, with author Anthony Horowitz attached to write. Having already adapted his own Alex Rider books for Amazon Prime, Horowitz will be working from the original Gaston Leroux novel, as opposed to the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.

Since the series is in the very early stages of development, there are currently no further details about casting or air-dates. The news comes in the wake of Cameron Mackintosh’s announcement of the West End show being closed until 2021, and the UK tour being scrapped.

Who would you like to see play the Phantom and Christine?
