World premiere of new musical to lead Spring/Summer 2023 season at Leeds Playhouse

The team at Leeds Playhouse have announced their Spring/Summer season for 2023, including the world premiere of In Dreams, a new musical by David West Read featuring the songs of Roy Orbison, and directed by Luke Sheppard.

Kay Mellor’s A Passionate Woman also returns to the venue for the first time in 30 years, in memory of the leading dramatist with the production being performed in her home city and directed by Sameena Hussain.

A new production of William Golding’s Lord of the Flies features in the new season, alongside William Shakespeare’s Henry V and John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men.

As part of 1001 Stories, new production Sinfonia, directed by Alan Lyddiard, will be created from stories donated by the older people of the Leeds City region in a celebration of lives lived to the fullest. For younger audiences, children’s show Football Freddie will be presented by local company Fidget Theatre, getting audiences in the mood for the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Artistic Director and CEO James Brining said: We all tell stories. It’s part of what makes us human, how we describe the world, understand the landscape around us and how we would like it to be. This season, we are sharing stories that are simultaneously deeply humane and sweeping in scope. Each speaks to the moment – to who we are today, and we our hopes are for tomorrow.”

Booking is now open for priority access, Playhouse pass and under 30 members, with general sale beginning on 22 November here.
