WNO announces revival of Leonard Bernstein’s CANDIDE in 2023

Welsh National Opera have announced a revival of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide in summer 2023, opening at Wales Millennium Centre in Cardiff from 22 June before visiting Llandudno, Oxford and Birmingham.

Conducted by Karen Kamensek, the production will star Ed Lyon (Tannhäuser at the Royal Opera House) as Candide, South African soprano Vuvu Mpofu as Cunégonde, Madeleine Shaw (ENO's The Handmaid's Tale) as The Old Lady and Mark Nathan (Dead Man Walking) as Maximilian.

Candide is a contemporary operetta based on the novel by Voltaire. Candide and his friends Cunegonde, Paquette, Maximilian, Dr. Pangloss, and the old lady (with one buttox) survive numerous disasters but never give up their search for truth in this "best of all possible worlds."
