Winners of 2022 Olivier Awards announced

The winners of the 2022 Olivier Awards have been revealed in a star-studded ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall this evening (10 April).

Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club was the big winner of the night picking up seven awards, winning Best Musical Revival, Best Director (Rebecca Frecknall), Best Sound Design (Nick Lidster), Best Actor in a Musical for Eddie Redmayne, Best Actress in a Musical for Jessie Buckley, Best Actor in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Elliot Levey, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role in a Musical for Liza Sadovy.

Life of Pi was the other big winner, picking up awards for Best New Play, Best Set Design, Best Lighting Design, Best Actor for Hiran Abeysekera and Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the seven actors who play the Tiger - Fred Davis, Daisy Franks, Romina Hytten, Tom Larkin, Habib Nasib Nader, Tom Stacy and Scarlet Wilderink).

The Best New Musical title went to Back to the Future, with other awards in the Musicals categories including Best Costume Design for Catherine Zuber for Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Best Original Score or New Orchestrations for Get Up Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical, and Best Theatre Choreographer for Kathleen Marshall for Anything Goes.

The Best Revival was awarded to Donmar Warehouse’s Constellations, with Sheila Atim receiving the Best Actress accolade for her part in the show. Liz Carr won for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for the National Theatre’s production of The Normal Heart.

For dance, the Outstanding Achievement was awarded to Arielle Smith for ‘Jolly Folly’ in Reunion by English National Ballet and the Best New Dance Production was awarded to Revisor at Sadler’s Wells. In the opera categories, Best New Opera Production was given to Jenufa at the Royal Opera House and Outstanding Achievement in Opera went to Peter Whelan and the Irish Baroque Orchestra.

Other winners of the evening included Best Entertainment or Comedy Play for Pride and Prejudice* (*Sort Of), Best Family Show for Wolf Witch Giant Fairy at the Royal Opera House, and Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre for Old Bridge at the Bush Theatre.
