The world premiere of new musical How to Dance in Ohio will be presented as the 2022/2023 season opener at Syracuse Stage, running 21 September to 9 October.

Inspired by Alexandra Shiva's award-winning documentary of the same name, the musical will feature a book and lyrics by Rebekah Greer Melocik, with music by Jacob Yandura, choreography by Mayte Natalio, and direction by Sammi Cannold.

The cast will feature Tony Award-winner Wilson Jermaine Heredia, Broadway veterans, and seven autistic actors. Starring in the musical will be Heredia as Dr. Emilio Amigo, Haven Burton as Teresa, Darlesia Cearcy as Johanna, Carlos L. Encinias as Kurt, Desmond Edwards as Remy, Amelia Fei as Caroline, Nick Gaswirth as Michael, Gaelen Gilliland as Amy, Madison Kopec as Marideth, Liam Pearce as Drew, Marina Pires as Ashley Amigo, Imani Russell as Melissa, Conor Tague as Tommy, and Ashley Wool as Jessica.

How to Dance in Ohio explores what it means to belong, the courage it takes to put yourself out in the world, and the universal need to connect. The musical follows a group of seven autistic young adults at a counselling centre in Columbus, Ohio. With the support of clinical psychologist Dr. Emilio Amigo, the centre arranges a spring formal dance, and encourages them as they encounter love, fear, stress, excitement, and hope.

Tickets for the production will go on sale 25 July.
