West End production of THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA to reduce orchestra size by half

POT

It has been announced that The Phantom of the Opera’s orchestra will be reduced by 50% when the production returns this summer.

Despite promises that the show would return as the “original Phantom”, this reduction means decreasing its previous 27 musicians to just 14, as per the touring production.

This news has also raised concerns about the future of orchestras in other shows in the West End and the decline of some instruments in favour of keyboards used to replicate certain sounds.

Previous players are permitted to re-audition for the new orchestra but 13 of the positions will sadly no longer exist.
