Hailed by the Sunday Times as ‘The theatre event of the decade’, the award-winning production of War Horse is making it to the big screen in November.

To mark Remembrance Sunday this year, selected cinemas across the UK will be showing the National Theatre Live production from 11 November. It follows 8 record-breaking years in London’s West End and has played in 11 countries around the world to 8 million people. Before the pandemic, the production was touring across the UK and internationally.

Joint Chief Executive of the National Theatre, Lisa Burger, said: “We are so pleased to be able to support our cinema partners during what continues to be an extremely difficult time for the industry”. The cinema industry have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to ensure safety is a priority “but without content to broadcast and support from audiences they face a very tough future.

“War Horse is definitely one of the theatre’s classic shows, it showcases “the creativity and magic of theatre and we hope that the opportunity to watch it or the other 10 classic NT Live titles we are broadcasting will encourage people to make a visit to their local cinema”.

War Horse, written by Michael Morpurgo, is set at the outbreak of World War One. Joey, a beloved horse of Albert, is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France as part of the war effort. Soon Joey is caught up in enemy fire and fate takes him on an exceptional journey, serving on both sides of the war before he finds himself deserted in no man’s land. Back in England, Albert remains on his parents’ Devon farm and is unable to forget his beloved friend Joey. His age doesn’t deter Albert from embarking on a extraordinary journey of his own as he tries to find Joey and bring him back home.
