UK premiere of Something Rotten postponed until 2021
In an announcement by Birmingham Repertory Theatre today, the UK premiere of Something Rotten and a number of their Autumn/Winter 2020 shows have been postponed.
The hit Broadway musical comedy was due to run in October 2020 but this has been cancelled due to the ongoing closure of UK theatres. Thankfully, the show has been rescheduled to October 2021 and will be directed (as previously planned) by the theatre’s new Artistic Director, Sean Foley, with choreography by Carrie-Ann Ingrouille of Six the Musical.
Set in 1595, the production follows two brothers who try to compete with William Shakespeare in the theatrical world. The musical was nominated for ten Tony Awards during its run on Broadway in 2015.
Something Rotten has a book by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell with music by Wayne & Karey Kirkpatrick.
Sean Foley said: “We are disappointed that a number of our Autumn season productions are unable to go ahead as planned – in particular I was excited to be directing my first show at The REP. However, we are working hard to ensure we can still bring these brilliant shows to our stages and to Birmingham audiences in the not too distant future.”
Other REP productions postponed are as follows: Breakfast on Pluto, Calmer, Bright Places, Life Is No Laughing Matter, Noughts and Crosses and Seven Methods of Killing Kylie Jenner.
