Theatre Royal Stratford East to reopen in February with socially distanced season of work
Theatre Royal Stratford East has announced it will be reopening in February 2021 with a socially distanced season of work.
Thanks to its Culture Recovery Fund grant, the theatre will reopen with Dipo Baruwa-Etti’s new play, The Sun, The Moon and The Stars, from 3-20 February. Directed by Artistic Director Nadia Fall, the play explores the aftermath of a racially motivated murder of a young man and his twin sister’s fight for justice.
Following this will be a revival of Dennis Kelly’s psychological thriller After the End, set in a city under nuclear attack. Lyndsey Turner will direct the two-hander, which will run from 3-20 March.
April De Angelis’ new play, Extinct, concludes the reopening season, playing from 21 April to 8 May. Extinct is a direct response to the climate emergency, and weaves together testimonials from Extinction Rebellion activists.
Artistic Director Nadia Fall said: "Despite a challenging year, we found new and innovative ways to continue making work and to keep the connection with our audiences and local community alive. We have staged site-specific theatre in a basketball court, made films online and broadcast on Sky Arts, as well as platformed new writing as audio plays – all of this while the physical doors of the theatre had to remain closed.
"But what we’ve wanted most of all is to welcome people back into our building and to reignite our stage. Stratford East’s reopening season is designed to do what theatre does best – a live communal connection through story.”
