Theatre Royal Stratford East will re-open in June and have announced its plans going forward until the end of the year.

Their first production will be the previously announced and rescheduled The Sun, the Moon and the Stars by Dipo Baruwa-Etti, an emerging playwright. When a young woman loses her twin brother in a racially motivated murder, she begins her battle to find justice. The piece will run from 2-19 June, and will be made available to stream from the 15-20 June, starring Kibong Tanji and directed by the venue’s artistic director Nadia Fall.

Filling out the creative team will be Peter McKintosh (design), Oliver Fenwick (lighting), Tingying Dong (sound), Dannielle ‘Rimes’ Lecointe (movement) and Justine Kehinde (assistant director).

Next up will be Extinct, a new play from April De Angelis that focuses on the climate emergency through a variety of testimonials, directed with dramaturgy by Kirsty Housley. This piece will run from 30 June to 17 July; streaming possibilities and casting are still to be confirmed – watch this space Besties!

Brendan Coyle will star in a revival of Conor McPherson’s Shining City, which follows a psychotherapist and former priest as they search for their place in the world in the wake of loss and new paths taken. Shining City will run from 17 September to 23 October. Nadia Hall will direct once more, with design from McKintosh, lighting from Howard Harrison, sound by Alexandra Faye Braithwaite and movement from Jack Murphy.

The venue will herald the return of its annual pantomime with a version of Red Riding Hood from 27 November until 31 December, brought to life by Carl Miller (book and lyrics), Robert Hyman (music and lyrics), Robert Shaw Cameron (direction), Jean Chan (design), Rick Fisher (lighting), Helen Skiera (sound) and Ingrid Mackinnon (movement).

The venue’s Young Company are also hard at work on Scream Fire (For the Revolution) and Simon Stephen’s Punk Rock.
