Theatre Royal Stratford East announces 2022-23 season
The Theatre Royal Stratford East has announced its 2022/23 season and a new royalty scheme for East London freelancers, for those aged under 25 and locals.
The new season will feature much loved story Cinderella by Leo Butler and Robert Hyman as this year’s pantomime. Directed by one of Theatre Royal Stratford East’s Sky Arts Artistic Associates, Eva Sampson, Cinderella will open its doors on 19 November.
The season will include Anthony Neilson’s The Wonderful World of Dissocia, which is a poignant and comical look into the nature of mental health.; and Artistic Director Nadia Fall will direct Ramps on the Moon’s new play Village Idiot by Samson Hawkins.
There will also be a UK premiere of Tambo & Bones written by Dave Harris and directed by Matthew Xia as a co-production with Actors Touring Company, which is a satirical interrogation of the commodification and commercialisation of black pain.
The season will also include work from youth companies with both 2022 Stratford East Young Company and National Youth Theatre staging productions. Stratford East Young Company present Painkiller by Sophie Ellerby with NYT presenting Bola Agbaje’s Olivier Award-winning Gone Too Far!
Visiting productions will include the collaboration between Sheffield Theatres and Ramps on the Moon with their production of Shakespeare classic Much Ado About Nothing. ThickSkin and Traverse Theatre Company will bring their production of How Not to Drown to Stratford East from 26 January to 11 February 2023.
Theatre Royal Stratford East’s new Royalty Scheme will be made up of Freelance Royalty, a new free membership scheme designed to support freelancers in the arts that live or work in East London by helping with rehearsal spaces, workshops and showcase opportunities.
The scheme will also be built of Young Royalty and Local Royalty, Young Royalty is open for those aged 17-25 and Local Royalty for those who live within an East London postcode who will be eligible to access £15 tickets across productions at the Theatre Royal Stratford East.
Executive Director of Theatre Royal Stratford East Eleanor Lang said: “Freelancers are the life blood of the theatre industry, and it is our job to support them at all stages of their career. We are, therefore, excited to launch Stratford East's Freelance Royalty Scheme. Our new scheme will provide a range of training and development opportunities, and provide freelancers who live and work in East London with a welcoming base.”
