The Stage 100 list revealed recognising 2020 response to the pandemic

The Stage 100

Yesterday we heard who had been acknowledged in The Stage 2021 Awards and today the publication has released its 100 list, reflecting this year’s most influential theatre workers.

The list this year has been reimagined to celebrate the industry’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic and the eagle-eyed amongst us will notice that there are only 99 entries this year. The judges decided that it should be incomplete as the final space represents all of the other theatremakers who have been inspirational and risen to the challenges of 2020.

Unlike previous lists when those recognised are ranked by order of influence, this year’s 100 is divided into five areas representing the way the industry has responded to the pandemic: putting on shows, lobbying and campaigning, fundraising, serving the community and support and development.

To mention only a few: Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber, LW Theatres Chief Executive Rebecca Kane, playwright James Graham and publicist/playwright Laura Horton have been recognised for lobbying and campaigning; whilst SOLT and UK Theatre Chief Executive Julian Bird, Association of Circus Proprietors chairman Martin Burton, leaders of BECTU & Equity and the team behind Freelancers Make Theatre Work have been mentioned for their advocacy work.

For putting on shows, Nimax Theatres’ Nica Burns, Death of England: Delroy star Michael Balogun and Keith Saha & Julia Samuels from 20 Stories High have been recognised, along with Nick Starr, Nicholas Hytner and Katrina Gilroy from London’s Bridge Theatre, Lucy Askew and Zoe Seaton of Creation Theatre and Big Telly.

Those celebrated for serving their communities include Tamara Harvey and Liam Evans-Ford at Theatr Clwyd and theatremakers who worked in or supported the NHS during the pandemic.

For fundraising, Damien Stanton and Chris Marcus of The Show Must Go On! campaign and the Theatre Artists Fund are acknowledged; with Directors Robert Icke and Lyndsey Turner, Coventry City of Culture Trust’s Elizabeth Lawal and Inc Arts’ Amanda Parker recognised for providing support and development this year.
