Following its online premiere back in October for Black History Month, The RSC has re-released an audio recording of award-winning writer Juliet Gilkes Romero’s play, The Whip, on Youtube.

Marking one year since the play’s press night at the Swan Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon, the company is also hosting an exclusive listen-along event on 11 February at 7pm. Audiences listening at this time will be able to interact with the production’s creative team via The RSC’s Twitter account (@thersc).

The Whip, direct by Kimberley Sykes, explores the human cost of the multi-billion slavery compensation bill, which contained provision for the financial compensation of slave owners - rather than of slaves themselves - by the British taxpayer, for the loss of their "property" following the abolition of the slave trade in 1833.

The audio recording features the original cast, having recorded their parts remotely from home. It also includes sound design by Claire Windsor and music by Akintayo Akinbode.

The Whip will remain on The RSC's official Youtube channel until 16 March 2021.
