The New York Times has revealed that Broadway’s longest running show, The Phantom of the Opera, will close at the Majestic Theatre in New York on 18 February, following its 35th anniversary.

The cast and production team were informed of the closure earlier on today after it was cited that the show has not been covering its running costs with current audience numbers.

The Phantom of the Opera has music by Andrew Lloyd Webber with lyrics by Charles Hart, and additional lyrics by Richard Stilgoe. It has a book by Richard Stilgoe and Lloyd Webber, based on the novel Le Fantôme de l'Opera by Gaston Leroux, with orchestrations by David Cullen and Lloyd Webber.
