The Lost Boys musical to open on Broadway in 2022

The Lost Boys

Broadway may be closed until January but that hasn’t stopped plans for future productions, with a new musical version of The Lost Boys recently announced.

A Lost Boys Story will be a prequel rather than a straight adaptation of the film. Gerald McMahon, who wrote the song ‘Cry Little Sister’ for the original, has already written the soundtrack and is now awaiting its stage premiere.

Released in 1987, The Lost Boys follows two brothers as they get involved with a mysterious biker gang of vampires. The film has since gathered a cult following and with the recent trend of turning movies into musicals, a stage version isn’t all that surprising. Director Joel Schumacher was also involved with the project before passing away in June.

The production will fill in the backstory of David, originally played by Kiefer Sutherland. After being orphaned in Lithuania, David emigrates to America as a young child. However, he then ends up at an orphanage, run by head vampire Max.

Casting for the show is currently underway, though JD McCrary (The Lion King) and Malcolm McDowell (A Clockwork Orange) are in talks to star.

As well as a Broadway musical, a TV reboot is also being made by the CW Network. It’s been reported that an executive from Warner Bros. has already pitched a crossover between the two, though both are currently on hold due to coronavirus.

The full album is currently available on Spotify and a few years ago McMahon even released some concept videos including the opening number, ‘Once Upon’ (see below).

Whilst A Lost Boys Story was planned to open in Autumn of 2021, it’s now more likely to launch sometime in 2022.
