The Last Five Years returns to Southwark Playhouse

Last Five Years Southwark Playhouse

Good news! Southwark Playhouse will be re-opening later this year with a socially distanced performance of The Last Five Years, after its initial run was cut short in March.

Jason Robert Brown’s hit musical tells the story of a five-year relationship between two people – Jamie and Cathy – but its unusual structure means it is told in reverse chronological order for Cathy’s story. It first ran in Chicago in 2001 and ran Off-Broadway in 2002. In 2014, it was turned into a film starring Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan.

There will be social distancing in place amongst the cast and audience members, with the auditorium having a reduced capacity.

The creative team includes director Jonathan O’Boyle, choreographer Sam Spencer-Lane, lighting designer Jamie Platt, sound designer Adam Fisher and set & costume designer Lew Newby. George Dyer will lead the four-piece band who will accompany the performers, alongside duties as musical director and orchestration.

The Last Five Years is set to run from the 1–31 October, with casting yet to be announced.

Southwark Playhouse has also announced a series of events called Setting the Stage. It is hoped that these events will support freelancers through the pandemic. It will see set and costume designers discuss their works, with all proceeds going directly to freelance artists.
