The Belgrade Theatre Coventry announces Spring 2022 season

Fighting Irish

The Belgrade Theatre have announced details of the first shows in its Spring Season, running from March to July 2022.

The season kicks off in March with Looking Good Dead, starring EastEnders legend Adam Woodyatt. The thrilling play has been adapted from best-selling author Peter James’ book by award-winning writer Shaun McKenna, and will arrive at the Belgrade from 7–12 March.

Following that is another murder mystery, as the classic board game Cluedo is adapted for the stage in a hilarious thriller-spoof. Directed by Mark Bell (The Play That Goes Wrong, A Comedy About A Bank Robbery), the play follows the characters from the classic board game as they arrive at a country house one dark and stormy evening. The play will premiere in Coventry from 14–19 March.

The Belgrade will also co-produce the world premiere of The Bone Sparrow this season with Pilot Theatre, York Theatre Royal, Mercury Theatre Colchester and Derby Theatre, as part of Coventry City of Culture 2021, running from 22–26 March.

The Russian State Opera will also be returning with Aida on 24 March and Carmen on 25 March, complete with a 30-piece orchestra.

There’s another world premiere for Coventry UK City of Culture 2021 from 2–16 April with Fighting Irish, written by Coventry writer Jamie McGough and co-directed by Hamish Glen and Corey Campbell.

An adaptation of Orwell’s famous classic Animal Farm will take to the main stage from 12–16 April. The production from The Children’s Theatre Partnership, in association with Birmingham Rep, is adapted by Robert Ike, and features puppetry by Toby Olie (War Horse).

For the younger members of the audience, Oi Frog & Friends! Live on Stage arrives 13 & 14 May. Based on the books by Kes Gray and Jim Field and featuring songs and puppetry, it’s the perfect introduction to theatre for kids aged 3+ years.

Simon Reade’s adaptation of Michael Morpurgo’s novel Private Peaceful will arrive from 17– 21 May, and Oddsocks will be returning to the Belgrade from 14-16 June too, with their chaotic, comedic take on Shakespeare’s Hamlet.

The Spring Season 2022 is rounded out with One Kiss from 7–9 July. Presented by One Kiss Theatre Company, in association with the Belgrade Theatre, Lara J West performs three women’s journeys through womanhood, accompanied by a live band and original score.

Further shows in the Spring Season will be announced shortly. Tickets are available on general sale from 15 October here.
