THE BALLAD OF JOHNNY LONGSTAFF comes to the Oxford Playhouse
‘The Ballad of Johnny Longstaff’ comes to The Oxford Playhouse this autumn from Tuesday 28 to Thursday 30 September. Direct from Northern Stage the musical is a celebration of a working-class hero and has been performed and co-produced by BBC Radio 2 Folk Award Winners the Young’uns.
The Young’uns bring together 16 specially composed songs, spoken word and striking imagery with their trademark harmony, honesty and humour to tell the one mans true story through the Hunger Marches of the 1930s , the Battle of Cable Street and the Spanish Civil War. With the recording of Johnny’s voice himself it brings to life a tale of a working class hero who chose not to look the other way when the world needed his help.
The play is directed by Lorne Campbell and the Young’uns use songs from their original album as well some brand new material./
Sean Cooney from the Young’uns said, “When Duncan Longstaff told us the incredible story of his dad’s life, we knew we had been given somethings very special. Deciding how best to share this remarkable gift might be a life’s work. Five years on from our meeting with Duncan, this new fully staged theatre version of The Ballad of Johnny Longstaff is the culmination of our journey together and our big chance to share Johnny with the world he fought so hard to raise at the time it needs him most.”
‘The Ballad of Johnny Longstaff’ has been co-produced between Northern Stage, The Young’uns and Harbourfront Centre, Toronto.
Tickets are available from £10.00 and are available here.
