The Almeida Theatre announces a new season for 2021

Almeida

The Almeida Theatre has announced its programme for the coming months, with six shows taking the theatre up to February 2022.

The world premiere of and breathe.. kicks off the season, running from 16 June – 10 July. The play by Yomi Sode is a theatrical adaptation of poems from his upcoming release Manorism, which will explore family relationships, loss and culture.

Hymn by Lolita Chakrabarti will run from 16 July – 13 August and tells the story of two men who meet a funeral and their two lives become entwined. The play sold out a string of live streamed performances earlier in the year (we gave it 4.5*) and it will now have a live run.

Once Upon a Time In Nazi occupied Tunisia by Josh Azouz will play from 21 August – 18 August and is a brutally comic new play with this synopsis: ‘1943. Four months into the Nazi occupation of Tunisia. You’re imprisoned in a labour camp. You’re buried up to your neck in the middle of the burning hot desert. You’re dying of thirst, you miss your wife and your best friend just pissed on your face.’

They will be presenting Shakespeare’s The Tragedy of Macbeth, a familiar tale by the bard with double double, toil and trouble. This will run from 25 September to 20 November, and stars Saoirse Ronan marking her UK theatre debut.

As previously reported, musical Spring Awakening will see the theatre into the new year running from 30 November 2021 to 22 January 2022. The Tony and Olivier award winning musical tells the story of adolescent anarchy.

The final play in the announced season will be The Key Workers Cycle, which will play from 31 January to 5 February 2022. A presentation of nine short plays, which celebrates the humour, hope and stories of those who keep our daily lives running.

Almeida Artistic Director Rupert Goold said: “Although still battered and bruised by the last 14 months, and keenly aware that many within this industry continue to suffer as a result of the pandemic, this announcement today feels like an exhalation and moment to pay tribute to the endurance and creativity shown by so many friends and colleagues. We’re announcing six new productions, including three world premieres (four if you include Hymn which plays to in-person audiences for the first time), plus two classic revivals, and a list of writers, directors and actors who are largely new to the Almeida.

“It’s particularly exciting to announce Almeida For Free performances across the whole season, with all tickets for those performances available for free to anyone 25 and under.”
