Major study proves singing no more dangerous than talking in spread of Covid-19
According to a government-supported study, singing is no more risky to the transmission of Covid-19 than talking.
The study, published on pre-print server ChemRxiv, was conducted on 25 professional performers who completed a number of exercises including breathing, speaking, coughing and singing.
They were asked to sing and speak ‘Happy Birthday’ at different volumes in the experiment, which concluded that singing did not “produce very substantially more aerosol" than speaking.
It has also been said that rather than restricting the activity of singing, more attention should be paid to the volume, number of participants and ventilation where performance takes place.
It is hoped that the results will provide a "rigorous scientific basis" for performance guidelines going forward.
