Shakespeare in the Squares returns with THE TEMPEST to celebrate fifth anniversary
It has been announced that outdoor theatre favourite Shakespeare in the Squares will return this summer with their most ambitious season yet.
In celebrate their fifth anniversary, Shakespeare’s The Tempest will tour 18 squares across London, beginning with previews from 15 June and officially opening at Arundel and Ladbroke Gardens on 21 June, running through to 8 July.
Shakespeare in the Squares is a non-profit touring theatre company who present a one-night-only Shakespeare production in a selection of London garden squares across the summer. They work together with garden communities and local organisations to tailor each performance to the venue it is playing to in order to create an exclusive community celebration.
Dame Judi Dench, who is a patron of Shakespeare in the Squares said: “a marvellous idea…To take William Shakespeare, whose timeless plays always have something important to say about the human condition, into idyllic gardens and other iconic spaces, offers a great opportunity to engage new and non-traditional audiences of all ages.”
The Tempest, this time directed by actor-director Sioned Jones, has been described as “the perfect play”. A brilliant combination of romance, magic and revenge and Shakespeare in the Squares production sees the tale brought into the 1950’s to appeal to a more contemporary audience.
Founders of Shakespeare in the Squares, Sue Fletcher and Martin Neild, said: “After two years’ of Covid-enforced absence, Shakespeare in the Squares is thrilled to be returning with our joyful production of The Tempest. We are so grateful to the garden squares and parks that have kept the faith, and we look forward to bringing them our best show yet.”
