Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre announces shows for 2022

Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre have announced their 2022 programme, which will include a new adaptation of a classic novel, an adaptation of a favourite British movie, Alan Ayckbourn’s 87th play, a time-bending romance and a new version of Cinderella. These in-house productions will join an array of visiting productions.

Jane Eyre, adapted by Chris Bush from Charlotte Bronte’s much-loved novel, will be directed by Zoe Waterman and will play from 8-30 April. This will be a new and accessible version of the story, using actor-musicians, playful multi-rolling and a host of 19th century pop hits, while still staying true to the original's revolutionary spirit.

Brief Encounter, adapted by Emma Rice from Noel Coward’s original screenplay, will play from 22 July-27 August and will be directed by Paul Robinson. This new production will add joyous musical numbers and physical comedy, while still maintaining the classic romance of the movie.

Family Album, written and directed by Alan Ayckbourn, will play from 2 September-1 October. It follows the trials, tribulations and temptations of three generations of one family across 70 years in the same home, including a moving-in day in 1952, a birthday party in 1992 and a moving-out day in 2022.

Constellations, by Nick Payne and directed by Paul Robinson, will play from 28 October-12 November. Showing the many possible outcomes that can occur when beekeeper Roland meets astrophysicist Marianne, this is a play about quantum multiverse theory, love and honey.

Finally, a new adaptation of Cinderella, written by Nick Lane, with music and lyrics by Simon Slater and directed by Gemma Fairlie, will play from 2-31 December. Can a deranged trainee fairy with a wonky wand help Cinderella to go to the Christmas party of her dreams?

Tickets for all of the STJ productions go on sale on 9 February (with advance booking for members from today), and can be purchased here.
