Details have been announced for Bryony Shanahan and Roy Alexander Weise’s inaugural season at the Royal Exchange Theatre, commencing on 23 June 2021.

New gig musical Bloody Elle opens the season; a one-woman show about falling in love for the first time, featuring an original score by writer/performer Lauryn Redding, produced in association with Rebel Productions. The production runs from 23 June-17 July and will also be streamed online.

Stuart Slade’s Bruntwood Prize-winning play Glee and Me, directed by Nimmo Ismail, will run from 11 September-20 October, performing in rep with Weise’s new production of Katori Hall’s The Mountaintop between 25 September-29 October.

The Mountaintop is set at the height of America’s Civil Rights movement and is being revived following a successful digital reading at the venue last year, in response to the Black Lives Matter movement.

Other highlights include My White Best Friend – North, curated by Rachel De-Lahay and created with Liverpool’s Everyman and Eclipse Theatre, will be performed on 23 & 30 October; and the theatre’s Christmas production will be David Greig’s The Strange Undoing of Prudencia Hart, directed by Debbie Hannan, which runs from 4 December 2021-15 January 2022.
