Royal Court Theatre announces new season of work

The Royal Court Theatre have announced their new Autumn/Winter programme today.

The new season includes Jonathan Freedland’s Jews. In Their Own Words from 19 September-22 October, a theatrical inquiry into an ancient prejudice explored through words, song… and a dose of English irony; Rabiah Hussain’s Word-Play from 28 September-5 November, which explains how language seeps into public consciousness and reverberates with far-reaching consequences that will last for generations; and Jasmine Naziha Jones’ Baghdaddy from 18 November-17 December, a playfully devastating coming-of-age story, told through clowning and memory to explore the complexities of cultural identity, generational trauma and a father-daughter relationship amidst global conflict.

The new year opens with Travis Alabanza’s Sound of the Underground from 19 January-25 February 2023, which shines a spotlight on London’s iconic underground club culture and questions what it means to get your money’s worth when it comes to art; and Black Superhero from 14 March-29 April 2023, a brutal, unflinching and funny portrait of one man’s life spiralling out of control, in an age where our idols are Kings and our superheroes Gods.

Artistic Director Vicky Featherstone said: “First time playwrights and hugely experienced writers and journalists come together to make the variety of work at the Royal Court, from September to April. Everyone shares the urgent need to ask questions in an overwhelming world, and with their words and playful imaginations offer us a place to meet their stories, their ideas, and their experiences.

“From verbatim, to club cabaret and fantasy, all this fearless work plays with our expectations of theatrical form to entertain and provoke us, leading us in to surprising places to create a deeper sense of understanding. In times of uncertainty, it seems that writers are inviting us to go on a journey into their imaginations and find empathy and new connections there.”

Tickets are now on sale for supporters, and will be available to Friends at 12.30pm on 15 June and the general public at 12.30pm on 21 June here.
