Review: THE SNOWMAN, Peacock Theatre

Stepping into the Peacock Theatre this holiday season feels like entering a winter wonderland, as The Snowman returns to enchant audiences with its timeless magic. Whether you're indulging in childhood memories of the classic 1982 film or looking for a perfect way to immerse yourself in the festive spirit, this production offers something for everyone. Now in its 27th year, this adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ story remains a beloved Christmas tradition.

For those familiar with the original movie, the stage version expands its half-hour runtime into a delightful 90-minute experience. Thoughtfully crafted additions, such as the boy’s enchanting exploration of his home with a ballerina music box, toy soldier, and teddy bear, enhance the story while maintaining the whimsical tone of the film. These moments add depth and beauty, particularly through stunning dance sequences that captivate audiences young and old.

As a wordless production, The Snowman places significant emphasis on the cast’s ability to convey the story through mime and movement. The young boy in the central role manages this challenge effortlessly, guiding the audience with heartfelt expressions and ensuring even the youngest children can follow the narrative. While initial nerves seemed to play a small part in his performance, he quickly finds his rhythm, becoming integral to the show’s charm and energy.

The show’s immersive atmosphere is another highlight. Families and children fill the auditorium, their excitement amplifying the magic on stage. The hum of giggles, murmurs, and snack rustling creates a welcoming environment, perfect for introducing little ones to the theatre. Moments like the iconic ‘Walking in the Air’ sequence leave the audience spellbound, as the stunning flying effects bring the boy and his snowman companion’s journey to life.

However, as with any live performance, small mishaps add to the unique charm of the performance. A slight issue with the Christmas tree lights not switching on as intended was a reminder of the unpredictable nature of theatre. Additionally, there were a couple of instances when cast members seemed slightly ahead of the music. While this didn’t detract from the children’s enjoyment or the overall flow of the show, it suggested that an additional settling-in period could benefit the production.

The minimalist yet vibrant set design evokes the nostalgic feel of the original movie, with snow-covered trees and clever lighting capturing the magic of a winter’s night. The live orchestra breathes life into Howard Blake’s iconic score, its richness adding depth to every moment. The dazzling 'Land of the Snowmen in the second act, filled with playful characters and dynamic choreography, is a visual treat that delights audiences.

Ultimately, The Snowman is a heartwarming and magical experience, whether you’re seeking a trip down memory lane or simply aiming to get into the Christmas spirit. With a perfect balance of nostalgia, festive cheer, and childlike wonder, this production is a must-see for the season. For a festive treat that truly encapsulates the joy of Christmas, The Snowman at the Peacock Theatre is an absolute delight.

A spellbinding snow-filled journey that melts hearts and spreads Christmas magic.
