Little Angel Theatre’s The Singing Mermaid is a wonderful retelling of the popular Julia Donaldson children’s book.

The story tells the misadventures of an innocent and trusting mermaid who was lured into a travelling circus by the circus owner Sam Sly with the promise of fame and glory. However, the limelight is not all what it promised to be. The Singing Mermaid ends up unhappy and missing home. With the help of her wonderful and talented friends in the sea and the circus, we follow her long way back home to Silversands.

The cast (Lizzie Wort, Ruth Calkin, Gilbert Taylor and Heidi Goldsmith) are amazing storytellers, as directed by Samantha Lane. With a combination of songs (music and lyrics by Barb Jungr), stories and puppetry (designed by Lyndie Wright), they captivate the audience with the story of The Singing Mermaid. The panto-like interaction with the audience makes it even more fun for the younger audience, helping them to relax and enjoy the show.

The lighting by Sherry Coenen creates a festive atmosphere in the theatre, and the set is a showstopper as it welcomes the audience to an under the sea circus-like structure and is a good conversation piece before the show starts.

There is a lot of attention to detail with the props in the show, even using various items to depict the changing of seasons.
