Review: THE HIGHWAYMAN, OVO Theatre

Based on the Alfred Noyes poem of the same name, The Highwayman takes us back to 1666, where we find Claude Duvel riding (riding, riding) back and forth between London and Suffolk, in this gritty yet humorous tale.

This brand new musical has heaps of promise, in the main due to the strength of the songs which weave the narrative together in a heartfelt and punchy style, with great harmonies and chants. The story reminds us that historical issues have a way of repeating themselves, with many of the themes remaining relevant today: The power of men over women; the lengths that parents will go to for their children; poverty impacted decisions; and how loss can shape a life.

This cast are all very strong, with the gruff Kevin Wathen in the titular role, delivering convincing emotion throughout; Josselyn Ryder captivating as Duval’s love interest Bess, with her incredibly powerful vocals; and Guido Garcia Lueches as Thomas French; with their perfect comic timing the highlight of every scene they are in.

Adam Morris on the piano underscores the full musical, mostly solo, setting the tone for each scene. The songs pack a punch, with hard hitters such as ‘Your Life For Your Girl’ and ‘Forget-Me-Not’ sombre moments amongst the humour.

The story, which is broadly based on the original prose, is slightly meandering and some of the first half could be streamlined to build further warmth and empathy towards the characters. OVO are well known for amalgamating different genres and opposing styles, and that theme continues here, with the story meandering, sometimes wildly, from dark and sensual to slapstick and funny. Both styles are delivered very well by this cast, but the swing between them is a little disjointed and occasionally too drastic, resulting in the tone of the piece being slightly unclear at times.

A thought provoking new musical packed with prose and emotion, delivered by an energetic and convincing cast.

**** Four stars
