Whilst theatres up and down the country slowly but surely begin to open their doors and welcome audiences back, online theatre continues to thrive and entertain us in the comfort of our own homes. And whilst musical theatre stars are beginning to return to our beloved stages, talented young performers continue to train and work their way into the industry. Organised and hosted by Nathan Seatter-Messer, this second virtual concert from The Future of Musical Theatre gives a platform for young performers to showcase their skills in a selection of solo and duet performances. 

This concert manages to squeeze 14 performances into its hour-long programme, and there is something for everyone here with a blend of songs from older classic shows such as A Chorus Line and Anything Goes. and modern favourites including Waitress, Be More Chill, Six and Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.

With host Nathan introducing each performance, we are introduced to a number of young performers with their sights set on joining the musical theatre industry that they all love, and it is safe to say that the future of musical theatre is in safe hands if the talent on display in this concert is anything to go by. Highlights included Maisie Beggan’s performance of ‘Nothing Stops Another Day’ from Ghost, Lily Casey Murphy’s take on ‘When He Sees Me’ from Waitress, Dillon White’s performance ‘Moving Too Fast’ from The Last Five Years and Ellie Jennings’ rendition of ‘Spotlight’ from Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, along with a beautiful duet of ‘Suddenly Seymour’ from Little Shop of Horrors by Lily Casey Murphy and Fin Sawyer. 

This well put together concert not only celebrates young talent but highlights the importance of arts education for young people. Youth art programmes and schools have helped these young performers to hone their skills and it is vital that they are able to continue to do so to bring fresh new talent into the industry. The Future of Musical Theatre is committed to helping the next generation with workshops and auditions, with plans to continue to further do so in the coming years. This concert also helps to raise funds not only for The Future of Musical Theatre itself, but also for The Barn Theatre and Acting for Others. 

Overall, this concert from The Future of Musical Theatre is an hour of refreshing entertainment that celebrates the young talent that is sure to be gracing our stages in the years to come. The future is bright.
