Fringe review: SUPER, Matthew Radway - Edinburgh Festival Fringe
A group of actors are on Hollywood Boulevard, posing as famous characters for tourist photos. It's 100 degrees, Batman has just punched Robin in the face, Catwoman is screaming and Jack Sparrow has fainted, and its about to be broadcast on TMZ. It's all gone just a little bit wrong!
Super is a story about ambition, love and complete failure told with a dark humour and a character suit.
Max Dowler is Batman and Charlie Vero-Martin is Catwoman, both of whom tell their version of events brilliantly. Their view of each other is clear; he is infatuated with her, she is in love with Robin. Awkward!
It's an amusing look at relationships, people's perceptions of situations and how you can read the signals totally differently from the ones you're actually being given. Throw in a few costume characters and you have the lot.
Whether you're a fan of super heroes or not, this show is worth a watch. It gives us the acumen to understand that 'it's not who we are underneath, but what we do that defines us'.
Kitsch and Super-funny!
