Fringe review: SUDHA BHUCHAR - EVENING CONVERSATIONS, Soho Theatre - Edinburgh Festival Fringe
'You're the one with the identity crisis mum, not us!' Middle class, middle-aged, multicultural mother of millennial sons Sudha invites her boys to 'crack open a cold one' and share their views on life. Will her dual heritage (Hindu/Indian and Muslim/Pakistani), fiercely British, mono-lingual sons see their background as a place of strength or an unwelcome inheritance?
Bhuchar is a captivating storyteller, her words conjuring up visions of an antiquated India or a casual modern day home in Wimbledon; each location as clear as the next as we become part of the journey with her.
It's an engaging story which encourages us to think about our identity, our cultural background, our heritage and how this influences both society's perceptions of us and the difference in generational ideas. How much do we take for granted because previous generations couldn't?
A beautiful and honestly told story of how each generation’s struggle paves the way for the next, something that all ages and backgrounds can relate to in their own way.
Captivatingly candid and charmingly told.
**** Four stars
