Review: SOME OF US EXIST IN THE FUTURE, Nkenna Akunna - English Touring Theatre & Papatango
One of three winners of the Papatango New Writing Prize 2021 and directed by Rasheka Christie-Carter, Some of Us Exist in the Future tells the story of Chiamaka.
She’s just arrived in Brooklyn from the UK, it’s all new to her, queer dating, the realities of being an immigrant and the voices of the gods… This is one woman’s journey to finding not only herself, but her place in a world that’s not all it may seem.
This audio production has you feeling as disembodied and confused as its protagonist Chiamaka (Rachel Nwokoro), which successfully adds to being able to understand how she is feeling. Dealing with issues of the relationships between herself and her parents, the messages given to her from the voices and the strange dreams she is experiencing, it’s no surprise that life is overwhelming.
We’ve all dealt with feelings and thoughts that we’ve had to work through at some point in our lives so can easily share empathy with Chiamaka as she does exactly that.
Emotionally rewarding, envisioning and compelling. This piece is refreshing and relevant all at once.
