Review: SIX CHICK FLICKS, Leicester Square Theatre - Tour

Titanic, Pretty Woman, Dirty Dancing, Legally Blonde and so many more proclaimed “chick flicks” undergo a merciless critique in this thought-provoking production. Kerry Ipema and K.K. Apple deliver stellar performances, skilfully dissecting the plot points that defy logic and the responses by female characters seemingly plucked from a realm divorced from reality. Their adeptness in improvisation adds depth to the portrayal of the inherent flaws in these classic films.

The show deftly navigates between hilarity and introspection, offering poignant commentary on the perpetuation of patriarchal norms in popular cinema. The recurring theme of the 'Roses effect,' synonymous with the male gaze, serves as a recurring motif, shedding light on the pervasive influence of such perspectives throughout the genre.

From falling in-love montages to the transformational power of a new hairstyle, no trope is spared scrutiny. Ipema and Apple's portrayal of the male protagonists' sudden shifts in morals and ideals is particularly compelling, highlighting the incongruities often overlooked in these narratives.

Audience engagement is a highlight of the production, with attendees invited to share their own 'meet cute' stories and suggest chick flicks for impromptu reenactments. This interaction adds a layer of authenticity to the performance, further engaging viewers in the discourse surrounding these films.

In its exploration of themes ranging from class dynamics to the portrayal of female agency, the production manages to strike a delicate balance between humour and introspection. Ipema and Apple's nuanced performances, coupled with the show's adept handling of complex subject matter, make for a truly memorable theatrical experience.

This production offers a deeper examination of societal norms and gender dynamics, leaving audiences to contemplate these movies further. Or maybe not, they’re only chick flicks after all…
