Metro-Goldwyn-Mayers 1952 film Singin’ in the Rain is not only a much loved classic movie musical, but also the stuff of Hollywood legend. Debbie Reynolds feet bleeding after filming ‘Good Morning’ and Donald O’Connor being hospitalised after the wall stunt in ‘Make ‘em Laugh’ are just two of the trivia titbits that often get reeled out when the film is mentioned. 

The physical demands of performing this stunning musical live on stage are also immense, and the exemplary performances given by the cast appear effortless. Not only is the choreography in keeping with the 1920’s era of the story, it is executed flawlessly by Adam Cooper staring as Don Lockwood and Charlotte Gooch playing Kathy Selden. The pair complement each other wonderfully, have a powerful chemistry and look as if they have been dancing together for years. ‘Good Morning’ and ‘You Were Meant For Me’ are both highlights of the first act. Ross McLaren as Cosmo Brown finishes off the trio, doing a fantastic job of adding the comic element that the character is so well known for. 

It is the closing number of the first half that steals the show. The excitement in the audience is palpable as the first drops of water begin to fall on the stage for Cooper’s rendition of the title track, ‘Singin’ in the Rain’. His joy at performing this number is evident, and infectious, as he happily kicks and splashes water into the entranced audience. 

Act 2 is a whirlwind of colour, costumes and complicated dance steps, which make it impossible to tear your eyes away from ‘Broadway Melody’. Throughout the show, the numerous ensemble costume changes lend the feel of the Glitz and Glamour of Hollywood to the stage. Tim Mitchell’s considered lighting design moves gracefully between the gentle, romantic mood of ‘You Were Meant For Me’ and the technicolour vibrancy of ‘Broadway Melody’. 

The finale sees the 27-strong cast perform the titular number - complete with rain of course- choreographed using brightly coloured umbrellas, and has the audience singing along til the last note. It is the perfect ending to a visually spectacular production. 

Although Singin’ in the Rain is a classic story, it is incredibly gratifying to see that it can still feel fresh and modern through the use of AV, lighting and other production elements. And a nod really must be given to the incredibly hardworking production team - 14,000 litres of water per show is a lot of mopping!

This production is a must see, not just for fans of the original film, but for anyone who relishes a high energy, foot tapping evening of wholesome entertainment.
